Mental Milestone - the band
Brian Peltola, bass, vocals, keyboards and programming.

Brian started playing when he was 13 years old. At that time he played the guitar. Llater he became a bassplayer by coincidence. The band he played in had no bassplayer - and someone had to do it. "Today I am very happy with this change of instrument", Brian says. "It feels like the bass probably suits me better as an instrument than the guitar does after all. The bassplayer and the drummer is the "engine" of a band and that feels like the right thing for me".

It was bands like The Sweet, Uriah Heep, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple and other bands that made Brian start playing music. One of the real favorites was Thin Lizzy with bassplayer Philip Lynott. Also being a singer Brian loved to interprete Thin Lizzy songs - Rosalie, The Boys Are Back In Town and that kind of stuff.

Later Brian was ofcourse into Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake who really took rockmusic into a new dimension. At the same time bands like Kansas and Rush were on the move, and their complex music had a great appeal to him.

Kimmo Peltola, guitar, keyboards.

Only 10 year old Kimmo started playing organ. After a while he began playing the guitar instead, and at the age of 14 he really got started playing electric guitar.

"I had many heroes at that time who really inspired me - just to mention af few it was Whitesnake, the first albums with Ozzy Osbourne, who always seemed to have really great guitarplayers playing with him, and that kind of stuff. Guys like Randy Rhoads, Jake' E' Lee. Yngwie J. Malmsteen was also a very important source of inspiration to me with his element of classical music", Kimmo says.

Having mentioned those guys, I have to mention other great bands and musicians like Al Di Meola, Rush, Whitesnake, Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Saga and many more. Guys like Edward Van Halen, Steve Vai and Al Di Meola have created some of the most incredible stuff on their instrument. Those guys will live forever!

Povl Henneberg, drums, lyricist.

Being the son of a piano player it was natural to start playing the piano which Povl did, when he was only 10 years old. After a few years he started playing the drums instead, when he got very fascinated by Ian Paice of Deep Purple, who quickly became one of his main sources of inspiration. In those days Povl was into The Sweet, Uriah Heep, Slade, The Who and that kind of stuff, too.

"In the late seventees I started playing in a jazz/rock band, and the guitarplayer introduced me to some exciting stuff", Povl says. "It was guys like Billy Cobham, Return To Forever, Wasa Express and other bands of that kind, who really exceeded the limits I had known until then. At the same time we were listening to Rush, Frank Zappa, Kansas, Jethro Tull and many more. I became a member of a band called Iron Duke, which was influenced by for example Emerson Lake & Palmer. We used a lot of synthesizers and ofcourse the Hammond organ. Besides music that was written by Iron Duke, we played rockversions of classical music originally written by Georg Friedrich Handel and Edward Grieg.

Later I kind of rediscovered all the heavy stuff - Van Halen, Whitesnake which was not far away from my early favorite band, Deep Purple. For many years I have also been a great fan of Toto. I love the way this band grooves. Simon Phillips is doing a very good job in the band replacing another of my heroes - Jeff Porcaro".

From Ground Zero to Mental Milestone

Brian Peltola and Povl Henneberg first met each other in 1984 where they formed their first band together. At that time the band was a trio with a guy called Arvid Jensen on guitar. The band was called Ground Zero, and in the early years the repertoire was based on music by Cream, Van Halen, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and that kind of bands.

In 1987 Ground Zero began writing music themselves, and at the same time a new singer and a keyboardplayer became part of the band. In 1988 Kimmo Peltola joined the band as the new guitarplayer, and this started a change in the music. Now the primary inspiration came from Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Van Halen and the music David Lee Roth made with Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, and Gregg Bisonette and others. Ground Zero played at several festivals in Denmark and in 1990 the band won a big music contest.

Later Brian Peltola, Kimmo Peltola and Povl Henneberg were part of a band called Wet Spot, who played hundreds of gigs all over Denmark in the ninetees. The band had a great deal of fans due to the reputation of good playing and good live performance. The repertoire was based on many classic rocksongs by Queen, Van Halen, Deep Purple, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Gary Moore - just to mention af few.

Discovering a fantastic band like Dream Theater really gave us inspiration to try new ways of making music. To us they are outstanding, but anyway listening to their music made us feel that we could take our own music to a higher level - to make music which is totally different to everything else we have played. You cannot say that we have a specific style. Or you could say that the lack of a specific style is our style.

Our background in a musical sense is very identical to each other, and we are trying to use the experience we have achieved in a new way. Maybe you could say that we are trying to make a musical and lyrical comment on the world of today. The name of the band symbolizes curiosity of getting to a new level of understanding of what life is. In relation to this it also symbolizes new ways of making music - having the courage to try something new.
